based on a Stephen King story.
Seems to be a theme. I've just watched...
The Shining (1980)
It's many years since I've watched. The best part of a few decades, I should think. And this is possibly the first time I've sought it out to watch. It's one of those films that seemed to be on TV quite frequently, and I got drawn into it after catching the beginning.
Lots I'd forgotten. Like how dopey Shelley Duvall seems when playing Wendy for much of the film. It was like she was on quaaludes or had a traumatic head injury or something. It had the effect of making her seem unlikely to survive by her wits, which set up the latter part of the film well. I hadn't twigged before that Scatman Crothers was in the film. His name either passed me by or didn't mean anything on previous viewings. And in a decent sized role, as well. He kind of preceded LL Cool J being in every other horror film a couple of decades later. Jack's descent into madness seemed to happen much quicker than I remember. Perhaps I'd previously watched the longer version, rather than the European edit I saw tonight. Or perhaps being familiar with the plot made it go by quicker.
