The infamous fiasco of Knots Landing (#38) versus The Colbys (#56) in the Thursday 9pm slot is seen here, where neither show held up against Cheers (#3). Kay O'Brien (#45) was placed in KL's traditional 10pm slot but CBS quickly realized their mistake and moved KL back to 10pm. ABC left The Colbys in that losing spot and it never really had a chance.

I understand that The Colbys was ABC’s attempt to prop up their schedules with a second Dynasty on another night, but it only ever won its time-slot when paired with Dynasty on Wednesdays (the first two episodes of season one, the season two premiere and season two penultimate episode). For the rest of its run, it was last in its time-slot, bar a few times it beat Simon & Simon and the short-lived Bridges to Cross. I don’t know why they didn’t cut their losses and permanently move it to Wednesday, and try Hotel (which was established and rated reasonably well) on Thursdays.

What ABC did with THE COLBYS was bizarre; the network was having real ratings in 1985 and a lot of holes in their primetime schedule, so they dump their very expensive spin-off from their top show into a timeslot it couldn't survive.

Where do these guys -- and now, gals -- get these jobs?
