I had this uncomfortable image of Bezos's tacky fiancee returning from space having had all that silicone, collagen and fillers "scrambled"inside her body while in zero gravity. She'd come back looking like a sack of potatoes, with everyone reacting like the "pig people" episode of classic Twilight Zone, and the wedding would most definitely be off.

Space exploration to advance scientific knowledge is worthwhile but this whole space tourism malarkey is an obscenity. How many tonnes of carbon dioxide were poured into our atmosphere just so a bunch of rich women could float around in space clutching a flower for 10 minutes? Was being able to create some social media content for them worth contributing to the destruction of our planet?
Also, how much did this space jaunt cost? How many starving people could that money have fed? How many sick people could have been treated with that money. This Bezos event was truly disgusting.

Yes, that money could have been better spent on many worthy causes. Feeding the hungry, treating the sick, perpetual war in Ukraine...

This entire thing is clearly a way to advertise to rich bored people that they can be launched into space for ten minutes. It really has no other purpose - it's not about moving forward with space exploration, it's a scam to milk money from the 1%.

On a local morning radio show, the two hosts were debating whether Perry, Sanchez, King, etc. should be dubbed "astronauts" since they only went "close to the edge" of what is considered outer space. They also did not do experiments, pilot the vehicle, etc. the way astronauts do. Did that mean the press were incorrect in calling them "astronauts," as so many insist on calling them? The other host then brilliantly dubbed them "half-assed-ronauts".

In my view, being an astronaut is a profession, implying a certain skill set or sets. Not everyone who takes a sea cruise is called a sailor and not everyone who rides in a plane is a pilot or an aviator. Conversely, one can be a professional astronaut even before going into space.
As to the other question, so what if it's a publicity stint? Perry earned her money honestly; she's entitled to spend it however she wants.

Yes, and the public is just as entitled to find it insufferable. There's nothing inspiring about a bunch of rich, privileged women pretending that this is some sort of triumph.
A privileged woman like Gayle King saying "You wouldn't call it 'just a ride' if it were men" shows that they think their 4 minute trip was something special. Anybody with the dough could have the same opportunity. In fact, their privileged lives make it all the more laughable that they're trying to turn this into a "breaking the glass ceiling" moment.

Space flights with passengers of both genders have been done for awhile now.
Gayle is just defensive because she knows deep down that the only reason she has any sort of career/fame is because of Oprah.. not because of anything she's done on her own merits. That's why she's more defensive then the other women.
It was nice that Bezos allowed his mistress a little time up on space, that's all this stunt was about.
And I'll be honest that this stunt actually reinforces negative stereotypes of women instead of doing anything to advance women.
