I read Lady in the Van in its original incarnation in Writing Home, many years ago, and followed all the incarnations. It is remarkable how she just turned up outside his house and how he tolerated her for years. He says the smell from the van was often disgusting, but he developed this peculiarly touching relationship with her. Do explore some of his other works too. A Question of Attribution has Prunella Scales playing one of the most convincing portrayals of the late Queen I can remember seeing.
