[QUOTE="Snarky Oracle!, post: 444307, member: 57984"] Yes, to all of that. She lifts BUTTERFIELD 8 almost to the level of art, perhaps because of her resentment over the way Metro-Louis nastily forced her to do the picture. She's great in it. (I also agree that WAOVW is the more questionable win, but she's serviceable in the latter, more-status-ish role). What's so odd about old(er) Hollywood's efforts at showing beautiful young women aging is that in both GIANT's later scenes and VIRGINA WOOLF, Elizabeth is all made up to look "bad" and decades older than she actually was. And then they neutralize the effect laughably by giving her "from heaven" lighting used to flatter a face. Why not light her "from hell" to make her look old and awful rather than just relying on the make-up and added body weight? I confess I almost like Eddie Fisher, mess that he is. And I fantasize James Mason in the Lawrence Harvey role (Harvey was Taylor's drinking buddy, which is probably why he got the role. As was Monty Clift in SUDDENLY, LAST SUMMER and Roddy McDowall in CLEOPATRA, both actors miscast). But Mason had a heart-attack, and Liggett is already too similar to his STAR IS BORN ii character. (Maybe Frank Langella and his well-rehearsed John Geilgud voice for Harvey's role in NIGHT WATCH? But I actually find Harvey's sleaze factor in NIGHT WATCH more effective than it is in BUTTERFIELD 8). But, yeah, I'm a big defender of BUTTERFIELD 8, although its sanitized tawdriness -- in keeping with the cusp of the '50s/'60s -- is rather tiresome and bad-soapy. But Taylor's terrific. She earned that statue -- and the fact that she doesn't think so just convinces me even more that she did.
